CEIV Education Requirements

Membership in ASA is required before applying for the CEIV Credential.

To join, submit the following to asainfo@appraisers.org.

To complete the membership process, you will need to meet the following two requirements within ten (10) months of your application approval date:

  • • Pass the ASA Online Ethics Exam
  • • Pass a 15-Hour Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) Course and Exam

Before applying for the CEIV Credential, individuals need a college degree (or equivalent) and must complete ASA’s Business Valuation Principals of Valuation (POV) course series (or the equivalent) and complete the ASA CEIV Credential course and pass the related exam.

Business Valuation POV Courses or Equivalent
To satisfy the Business Valuation education requirements, individuals must pass ASA’s 4 Principles of Valuation (POV) courses in Business Valuation (BV201, BV202, BV203 and BV204).

Option 1: Take and pass each course in the classroom, virtually or OnDemand.

Option 2: Challenge out of each course by reviewing the course materials and taking and passing the corresponding exam.

Option 3: Pass the BV 8-hour Challenge Exam, which provides you with the necessary equivalent for BV201-BV204.

Option 4: Hold a designation or complete course work with another organization that has been approved as equivalent for the BV201-BV204 course work.*

CEIV™ Credential Course
ASA’s specialized course for the CEIV credential provides the student in-depth information on the CEIV Body of Knowledge (BoK) as well as the Mandatory Performance Framework (MPF). This course will be provided in both an OnDemand and live classroom format. The ASA CEIV course focuses on the following:
  • Fair Value Accounting and Regulatory Environment
  • Technical Guidance Related to Valuations for Financial Reporting
  • Use of the Valuation Report in the Audit Process
  • Mandatory Performance Framework accounting, auditing and valuation standards


All candidates for the CEIV certification must pass ASA's CEIV exam which is comprised of two parts. Part one focuses on the Body of Knowledge and part two focuses on the Mandatory Performance Framework. The exam will be provided in an OnDemand, timed, multiple-choice format.

Exam Retake Information

* The following credentials or course work satisfy Option 4 for Business Valuation POV course completion:
  • American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA): ABV designation (if ABV exam was passed)
  • Canadian Institute of Chartered Business Valuators (CICBV): CBV designation
  • The CFA Institute: CFA designation with at least 5 years of full-time business valuation experience
  • International Institute of Business Valuers (IIBV): iiBV 101-103= BV201-203; iiBV105 or ASABV301= BV204
